The Challenge
Since 2014, Red Badger has worked with Fortnum & Mason to drive business growth through digital transformation, via an ongoing programme of tech initiatives across the website that helps make everyday special for customers across every touchpoint. The focus since then has been on increasing the awareness and accessibility of Fortnum's wide range of products, and one particular category stood out as needing improvement: tea.
Fortnum & Mason is famous across the globe for its dedication to supplying the finest quality selection of tea, but the online experience needed more visibility to drive interest and revenue, and to share that impressive breadth with online customers in a new, innovative way. In essence, the gifting and curatorial elements that already existed with hampers needed to be brought to the tea consumer journey.
Our Approach
The solution was the Tea Experience, a design to improve the browsing experience and help customers find products faster, with advanced search that made online tea shopping fast, intuitive and interactive.
Red Badger integrated Fortnum's online store with Elasticsearch, a search engine supporting structured, unstructured, geo and metric queries, so customers could get a genuine answer to their search, just as they would in store, alongside enhancements like intuitive faceted filtering to drive conversion further.
Alongside the Tea Experience, Red Badger ensures the smooth day-to-day running of Fortnum's website, deploying up to five releases a day so new features and enhancements reach customers quickly and revenue increases can be realised almost instantly.

The Results
With less time waiting and more time browsing, server response times dropped from 3 seconds to 0.6, and the work helped the website deliver its biggest sales day, week and month in the last quarter of 2016.
Since the Tea Experience launched in March 2017, it has driven an 11% increase in new customers and a 33% increase in existing customers versus the previous year, an 8% increase in conversion rate, a 39% increase in average order value, and a 21% improvement in average page load times.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Context
Fortnum & Mason's tea range was famous in-store but under-represented online, and needed the same gifting and curatorial feel as the brand's hampers to drive interest and revenue on the site.
Approach
Built the Tea Experience on Elasticsearch for fast, intelligent search and faceted filtering, as part of an ongoing digital transformation programme since 2014 that deploys up to five releases a day to Fortnum's website.
Results
Since launching in March 2017, the Tea Experience has driven +11% new customers, +33% existing customers, +8% conversion rate and +39% average order value, alongside a page load time cut from 3 seconds to 0.6.
Ways of Working
Maintains Fortnum & Mason's website day-to-day as an ongoing partnership rather than a single project, shipping up to five releases a day so new features reach customers, and start driving revenue, almost immediately.
