The Challenge

Launching a new fraud detection product is one of those decisions where the consequences of getting it wrong are far higher than the cost of getting it right. The risks are commercial, committing engineering, security and operations resource against a concept that hasn't been pressure-tested with the people who will actually use it.

They are also organisational: a product like this only works if there is genuine alignment across the business on what it is, who it is for and what good looks like at launch. Equifax wanted to do better than a hunch and a roadmap. They wanted a robust, de-risked plan built on real customer evidence before serious money or engineering capacity went into the build.

Our approach

We started where the risk is greatest, with the customer. End-user research surfaced what customers genuinely needed from a fraud-detection product, separating what would actually move the needle from what was simply assumed.

From those insights we developed user-facing prototypes, deliberately built to enable rapid iteration, customer testing and validation. The prototypes did double duty: they kept the design honest by putting it back in front of users, and they gave the business a tangible visualisation of the core product experience to react to.

With the evidence in hand, we worked across the business to define and align on a single product vision: shared, discussed and agreed across the teams that would have to build and operate
it. We then converted the vision into the things the business needed to act on it: a prioritised backlog, technical recommendations, and a phased delivery plan for the initial product launch.

The results

At the end of the engagement, Equifax had everything it needed to move from idea to a confident build. A clear, validated picture of customer needs. A working visualisation of the product experience. A product vision the whole business had bought into.

And a prioritised backlog, technical recommendations and phased delivery plan to take the new fraud-detection product to launch, robustly, and with the major risks taken out of the picture before a single line of production code was written.
