My name is Dr. Chris Brauer, and as a strategy officer for the World Economic Forum, I've had the opportunity to explore and navigate the complexities of artificial intelligence (AI) in various contexts. Over the last 15 years, my team and I have been pioneering solutions, grappling with AI's potential and limitations, and encountering a multitude of trials and tribulations along the way.
Today, I would like to share my insights on a topic I am profoundly passionate about: responsible AI. This concept is more than a set of ethics principles written down on paper; it is about designing and developing AI systems that are, in their essence, responsible.
Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of being involved in numerous ethics panels and think tanks, where discussions around the implications of AI technology often circulate. Our world is on a precipice where AI solutions can be deployed in a meaningful way, fulfilling the lofty expectations we've set for them over many years. But alongside these opportunities, there are challenges we must address – particularly the ethical considerations surrounding the implementation of AI.
In our pursuit of AI advancement, we must align these technologies with human values. Without this alignment, we risk creating technologies that, instead of benefiting humanity as a whole, disproportionately benefit a select few. This alignment field is an exciting territory to be operating in and one that commands our focus.
As part of my work with the World Economic Forum, I've been involved in applying AI towards accelerating the pathway to energy transition and achieving net-zero emissions. This approach, often referred to as Green AI, is about creating AI solutions that are sustainable and clean, engineered by design. It's a critical task that goes hand-in-hand with developing AI that's responsible not just to businesses and users, but also to the environment and wider communities.
In our world today, there are two primary responses to AI development: the 'hit pause' gang and the 'innovation accelerator' gang. The former advocates for a more cautious approach, pausing to consider the ethical implications of AI, while the latter pushes for near-reckless speed, experimenting with technologies to learn enough to regulate them.
However, the idea of responsible AI shouldn't encourage a choice between innovation and regulation. Instead, it should inspire a systematic alignment of technology with our values, an endeavour that requires vast amounts of experimentation and learning.
The politics of AI classification, emotion tracking systems, and Green AI are just a few examples of the myriad issues we need to address as we continue to navigate the world of AI. But as we delve into these challenges, we must remember that our objective is to build responsible AI solutions – by design, not as an afterthought.
In doing so, we can ensure that our technologies are not just capable of optimising efficiencies and finding new opportunities, but are also responsible to the customers, businesses, workforces, and communities they serve. Through constant experimentation and learning, we can progress towards a future where AI is responsibly intertwined with every aspect of our society. And in this journey, I remain optimistic about the profound and positive impact responsible AI can make on our world.
